CS2 and CSGO skin trading: swaps, balance purchases and deposits

TL;DR
  • ▸Item-for-item swaps run through Steam's official trade system and carry a 0% CSBoard fee.
  • ▸Monetary P2P purchases settle through your platform balance, with a base sales fee of 2%.
  • ▸A deposit adds funds through a payment method at a 0% deposit fee; it is not an item exchange.
  • ▸Check finish, wear, float, StatTrak status and any trade restriction before accepting an offer.
  • ▸Sending a P2P trade requires the supported extension or app and its current eligibility checks.

Item swaps and money purchases are separate flows

An item-for-item trade moves one skin for another through Steam's official trade system. No money changes hands in that flow, which is why the item-for-item exchange fee is 0%.

On CSBoard, a monetary P2P purchase works differently: the buyer pays from their platform balance and the item is delivered through Steam. Those two mechanics have different checks, so read the terms of the specific transaction instead of assuming one set of rules covers both.

How the main transaction types differ

External payoutBalance moved outside the platformSeparate from the three rates above; verify current termsCurrent method availability and conditions
Tier filters are item-specific

Pattern-tier filters belong only to Case Hardened and Heat Treated item offers. Do not assume a tier parameter applies to other skins, weapons or categories.

What a deposit does and does not do

A deposit adds funds to your account through the payment method you select. The deposit fee is 0%, and a deposit is not an item-for-item exchange, so it does not require Steam item delivery.

Once funds sit in the balance, a monetary purchase settles through the platform. Keep the deposit step, the purchase step and any later external payout separate when you review costs.

What to check before you confirm a trade

  • Exact finish, wear and float, plus StatTrak or Souvenir status.
  • Pattern or tier only where that item type actually supports it.
  • Whether the offer is an item-for-item swap or a balance purchase.
  • Any trade protection or offer-specific restriction that may delay delivery or settlement.
Browser browsing is not browser selling

Sending a seller's P2P trade requires the supported extension or app and its current eligibility checks. Browsing the catalogue in a browser does not mean every selling workflow is browser-only.

Frequently Asked Questions

In an item-for-item swap, one skin moves for another through Steam's official trade system and no money changes hands, so the item-for-item exchange fee is 0%. In a balance purchase, the buyer pays from their platform balance and the item is still delivered through Steam. The two flows have different checks and different fee treatment, so confirm which one you are using before you accept an offer.
